Artistic metalworking (mosyazhnytsia) is an industry that manufactures metal products (copper, brass, bronze) for use in everyday life, ceremonial traditions, and as objects of decorative and applied art.
From generation to generation, folk craftsmen created a wide range of metal objects, ranging from everyday knives and flints needed in the household to complex products such as zgardas, cheresy, etc.
Not only women's jewellery was in demand and widespread among the Hutsul population: "zgardy", "shelesty", "chepragy", "chiltsi", "koltky", "rings", but also men's chest crosses, rings for handkerchiefs, plaques for hats, etc. The masters made needlepoint knives, folding knives, scales, hatchets, and weapons: flintlock pistols and rifles.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, with the penetration of market production into the Hutsul region, folk craftsmen began to produce their products mainly for sale, and less and less often they sold them through in-kind exchange. By selling their products at fairs or through intermediaries, they adapt to the conditions of the art market. As a result, new products appear that are not typical of highlanders' everyday life, such as cigarette cases and cassettes.
Hutsul craftsmen used soft and low-melting metals (copper, brass, zinc, tin), gold and silver were not available. Therefore, they made alloys that imitated precious metals with their colour.
The range of Hutsul craftsmen includes a wide variety of products, women's jewellery, men's crosses, tobivky, sticks, smoking utensils, folding and ordinary knives, shell cutters, and weapons.
The craftsmen use images of animals that inhabit the surrounding forests of the region to create their products.
The First World War interrupted the development of artistic metalworking, as many craftsmen were mobilised for the war and there was a lack of raw materials. The economic crisis that arose in Poland (1920-1930) caused great damage to the mosaic industry.
Many masters emigrated to Europe and America. As of 1935, there were about four dozen craftsmen left in the Carpathians, and in 1938, only six villages were producing non-ferrous metal artwork: Brustury, Rika, Yavoriv, Kryvorivnia, Krasnoilove, and Zhab'yem. After the war, the production of folk arts and crafts was resumed by the Hutsulshchyna artel in Kosiv, which united not only wood carvers but also folk metalworkers.
The craftsmen's products undergo major changes in traditional crafts. Craftsmen were forbidden to make crosses and vigils. Craftsmen were allowed to make hatchets only for exhibitions, which were of a souvenir nature. The liquidation of the Hutsulshchyna factory in Kosiv, the Brusturivskyi state farm (Brustury village), and the Kosiv Art and Production Plant had negative consequences for the field of metal art.
Today, the main centres of this industry are Kosiv, the villages of Biloberzka, Brustury, Kryvorivnia, Richka, Sheshory, Yavoriv, and others.
