“Three pieces of fabric — and here is the Hutsul woman dressed in the wind, fire, and earth of her native mountains”
There is no Hutsul woman's costume without the colorful waist garment — the one that wraps around the waist like a second skin and tells more about its owner than any words. The zapaska is the oldest unstitched clothing: two rectangular pieces of woolen fabric, with the front shorter than the back, from which the edge of a shirt peeks out. The obgortka is a whole woolen cloth that wraps around the waist and is tied with a patterned edge, simpler in cut but no less colorful. The plakhte is a more festive, more ceremonial type of waist clothing that combines ancient motifs with modern tailoring.
In this section — everyday and festive garments: from the modest everyday zapaska to the luxurious one woven with silver or gold threads, worthy of a bride at a wedding.
Types of Products in the Section
| Zapaska | Two-piece unstitched clothing: the front part is shorter than the back, woven ornament, colored stripes. |
| Obgortka | One-piece woolen cloth that wraps around the waist, tied with an edge. |
| Plakhte | A more ceremonial type of waist clothing with bright ornamentation, often for holidays or weddings. |
Materials and Manufacturing Techniques
Zapaskas and obgortkas are woven from natural sheep wool, often adding a metallic thread that imitates gold or silver — this is what gives the product the festive shine that Hutsul artisans are known for. The ornament and color were chosen intentionally: younger women wore bright patterns, while older ones opted for more subdued, darker tones.
When Each Product is Worn
The everyday zapaska or obgortka is worn as part of the daily attire — simple, comfortable, without excessive shine. The festive zapaska or plakhte with metallic thread is an essential element of the bride's wedding attire, as well as a bright accent in festival or concert costumes.
Care for the Products
Woolen products should be protected from moisture and direct sunlight, and stored in a flat position. It is recommended to clean them dry; the metallic thread and embroidered elements should not be washed in a machine.
Colors in the photo may differ slightly from the actual ones due to screen features and lighting during shooting.
Zapaska, obgortka, or plakhte — three ways to carry the mountains on yourself.
