“A Hutsul without accessories is like a meadow without a trembita: something important is missing in the voice”
The authentic Hutsul attire was never limited to just clothing. It was completed by details that concealed the character of the mountaineer — a ringing zgharda on the chest, a leather bag across the shoulder, a carved stick in hand, or a drimba in the pocket for evening songs by the fire. These items transformed the costume into an image, and the image into a legend.
In the section “Hutsul Clothing Accessories,” handmade products by masters from Kosivshchyna are gathered: brass decorations made of cast and engraved brass, natural leather for belts and bags, and wood for pipes and sticks. Each item is made individually, giving it a unique character.
What you will find among Hutsul accessories
| Chest decorations — zghardas and chepragas | Cast and engraved brass products — some of the oldest Hutsul ornaments, symbolizing status and protecting the owner. |
| Bags — taistras, tobivkas, tashkas | Handmade leather and embroidered bags, an inseparable companion of a true Hutsul on the road and at celebrations. |
| Belts and straps | Handmade leather men’s belts with embossing and metal embellishments, custom-made. |
| Herdans and silyankas | Colorful protective ornaments woven with beads using ancient Hutsul techniques. |
| Drimba | A metal musical instrument — a living part of the Hutsul musical tradition, also popular as a souvenir. |
| Hutsul pipe and stick | Handmade wooden products with characteristic carvings that complete the image of the Hutsul host. |
Materials and manufacturing techniques
Brass decorations are made by masters through casting or soldering with hard solders, followed by manual engraving and assembly — just as zghardas and chepragas were made a hundred years ago. Leather products are sewn and embossed by hand from natural leather, while wooden items — pipes and sticks — are carved individually, so the pattern of each product varies slightly.
Symbolism of Hutsul decorations
Zgharda is one of the oldest chest decorations of the Hutsuls, a complex composition of several rhythmic tiers that was considered a talisman and a sign of the family’s wealth. The kraika and belt have long served as symbols of family status, while the drimba accompanied the Hutsul in the most important moments — from weddings to evening songs in the meadow.
Care for the products
Brass decorations do not like moisture — after wearing, they should be wiped with a dry cloth to maintain their shine. Leather bags and belts should be periodically treated with special leather cream. Wooden products should be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.
Colors in the photo may differ slightly from the actual ones due to screen characteristics and lighting during shooting.
A small detail can tell you more about a Hutsul than an entire costume.
