“When the altar and the iconostasis speak the same language of carving, the altar becomes whole”

The altar and iconostasis set made of oak is created as a single ensemble for the altar: both pieces feature common twisted columns, floral ornamentation, and the same natural color of the wood. The altar, measuring 160 x 160 x 105 cm, is adorned with openwork panels featuring narrative reliefs, while the iconostasis, standing 130 cm tall, is shaped like a temple with domes and crosses. All carvings are handmade from solid oak.

About the Product

The corners of the altar are supported by four separately placed twisted columns on profiled bases, and between them are openwork walls with carved scenes, including the Last Supper. A wide oak tabletop is framed by a frieze with floral ornamentation. The iconostasis repeats the motifs of the altar on a smaller scale: its facades have arched doors with relief images, miniature twisted columns stand on either side, and the composition is completed with domes and crosses. Purchasing both items as a set guarantees that the carvings, the tone of the oak, and the proportions will be harmonized with each other.

Where It Fits and Where It Doesn't

✓ Suitable

  • New temples that are fully and immediately furnishing the altar
  • Parishes replacing an old altar and wanting an iconostasis in the same style
  • Altars with space for a 160 x 160 cm altar and passage around it
  • Temples with interiors in natural wood color

✗ Not the Best Choice

  • Temples that already have an iconostasis and only need an altar
  • Altars with a gilded iconostasis, which would better suit a gilded altar
  • Small chapels where an altar of this size would take up too much space

Advantages of the Material

  • Hardness of oak allows for deep relief carving that does not wear away over years of service and frequent cleaning.
  • Living grain pattern appears on the tabletop and smooth surfaces, making each set unique.
  • Natural tone of the wood deepens over time, acquiring a honey hue.
  • Massiveness of the oak parts gives both products stability, ensuring the iconostasis stands securely on the altar.

Traditions of Altar Carving

The set is made by the masters of the Creative Workshop of Sacred Products PIVTORAK & COMPANY in Kosiv, Ivano-Frankivsk region. The iconostasis in the shape of a temple on the altar is an ancient tradition that reminds of the Heavenly Jerusalem and that the Holy Gifts are kept in the house of God. The masters carve both products as a whole, from the sketch to the last curl, so that no detail falls out of the common idea.

Care

  • Place the set in a dry room with a stable temperature.
  • Keep the products away from heaters and direct sunlight.
  • Dust the carved panels and domes of the iconostasis with a soft brush.
  • Wipe the tabletop with a slightly damp, well-wrung cloth, then dry it thoroughly.
  • To refresh the finish, use only products designed for oak.
