“A well-equipped altar provides the priest with peace to focus on the most important things”

The proskomidiynyk, or altar, stands in the sanctuary, where the priest performs the proskomedia: the preparation of bread and wine for the Divine Liturgy. This proskomidiynyk is handmade from oak, without gilding. Its main practical advantage lies in the pull-out section of the tabletop, which increases the working surface when needed. The body is adorned with twisted columns, openwork panels with a cross in the central medallion, and a carved frieze.

Product Description

Under the main tabletop, there is a hidden pull-out section on metal guides. When more space is needed for the diskos, chalice, copies, prosphora, and notes during the proskomedia, it can be easily pulled out, and after the service, it can be hidden, maintaining the compactness of the altar. This is especially convenient in sanctuaries where every centimeter of space counts.

The body is framed with twisted columns with carved capitals. Between them are openwork panels with floral ornamentation, in the center of which is highlighted a medallion with a cross. Carved friezes run along the cornice and base. The dimensions of the product are 900 x 700 x 1050 mm, and the height of 1050 mm is designed for comfortable standing service.

Advantages of the Material

  • Reliability of the moving structure. The solid oak wood securely holds the guide fastenings, so the pull-out tabletop serves long without wobbling.
  • Resistance to loads. The oak tabletop does not sag under the weight of sacred vessels and maintains a flat surface.
  • Clarity of carving. Dense oak allows for deep twists of columns and fine openwork that do not lose relief over the years.
  • Durability. Oak altar furniture serves for decades under proper conditions, and the wood acquires a deeper shade over time.

Workshop Traditions

The proskomidiynyk is made by the masters of the creative workshop of sacred products PIVTORAK & COMPANY in the city of Kosiv, Ivano-Frankivsk region. The workshop combines traditional Kosiv wood carving with thoughtful design: the product must be not only beautiful but also convenient for daily service. Therefore, the classic twisted columns and openwork panels are complemented here with a pull-out tabletop, and each carved element is made by hand.

Care

  • Place the proskomidiynyk away from heating appliances and direct sunlight
  • Maintain stable humidity in the sanctuary without sharp temperature fluctuations so that the pull-out section moves freely
  • Pull out and push in the tabletop smoothly, without overloading its extended edge
  • Remove dust from the openwork panels, columns, and friezes with a soft brush
  • Periodically care for the wood with wood care products, such as oil or wax
  • Do not use abrasives, solvents, or aggressive household chemicals
