“I am the vine, you are the branches: he who abides in Me bears fruit”

In front of the iconostasis, on the tetrapod, there is an icon of the feast, and it is here that the community celebrates each solemnity of the church year. This tetrapod is handcrafted from oak, without gilding: the beauty of the product is created by the carving and natural wood. The lighter carved elements are combined with the warmer tone of the body, so the ornament is clearly readable even without gold. The image of the product is built by twisted columns, grapevines, and a central composition with the Chalice and the open Gospel.

Product Description

The central panel of the facade features a relief composition: a Chalice against the backdrop of an open Gospel with the inscription IC XC. It reminds of the two tables of the Liturgy, the table of the Word and the table of the Eucharist. The composition is framed with an openwork ornament of acanthus, and carved grilles are placed on the sides. The corners of the body are adorned with twisted columns entwined with clusters and leaves of grapes, and the entire cornice is decorated with a continuous frieze of grapevines.

The upper part has a flat platform 200 mm wide and a sloped side 700 mm long for placing icons. The dimensions of the product are 1400 x 900 x 900 mm, allowing the feast icon to be placed at a comfortable height for veneration and providing stability to the product.

Advantages of the Material

  • Hardness and wear resistance. Oak is resistant to mechanical damage, so the corners, columns, and cornice retain their clear shapes for a long time.
  • Stability of carving. Dense wood allows for deep spiral twists of columns and fine lacework that do not lose their relief over the years.
  • Natural beauty. The noticeable grain pattern of oak makes each tetrapod unique, so the product does not require gilding or painting.
  • Noble aging. Over time, oak acquires a warmer, deeper shade, and the product only improves in appearance.

Workshop Traditions

The tetrapod is made by the masters of the creative workshop of sacred products PIVTORAK & COMPANY in the city of Kosiv, Ivano-Frankivsk region. The woodcarving of the Kosiv region has deep roots, and working on church vessels has always required from the master not only skill but also an understanding of symbols. The grapevine, twisted columns, Chalice, and Gospel chosen for this tetrapod are not accidental: all these motifs have long been present in Ukrainian church art. Each element is carved by hand.

Care

  • Place the tetrapod away from heating appliances and direct sunlight to avoid drying out the wood
  • Maintain stable humidity in the temple, avoiding sharp temperature fluctuations
  • Regularly wipe surfaces with a dry soft cloth
  • Remove dust from the lacework, grilles, and recesses of the spiral columns with a soft brush
  • Periodically care for the wood with products for oak, such as oil or wood wax
  • Do not use abrasives, solvents, and aggressive household chemicals
