“The honored icon deserves a worthy place, before which the community stops in prayer”

The side kiot is installed along the walls of the temple or on either side of the iconostasis to place a temple or especially honored icon in it. This kiot is handmade from natural wood without gilding, available in alder or oak. Its architectural composition with double twisted columns, arched framing, and a carved crest with a cross transforms the area near the icon into a small sanctuary within the temple. The dimensions of 1300 x 2500 mm are designed for a large full-length icon.

Product Description

The center of the kiot features an icon in arched framing with carved corner inserts. On each side, it is flanked by two twisted columns with carved capitals, resting on figurative consoles with plant ornamentation. Below the icon is an openwork carved panel, and above the columns runs a cornice with a carved frieze.

Completing the composition is a tall crest with a lush acanthus ornament, crowned with an eight-pointed cross. The kiot stands on a massive podium, providing stability to the structure and elevating the icon above floor level. The icon in the photo is shown as an example: the kiot is made for a specific image, and the configuration should be confirmed with the manager.

Material Advantages

  • Alder: lightness and clarity of carving. The uniform wood of alder allows for fine carving of the acanthus crest and openwork, and the lighter weight of the tall structure makes it easier to transport and install.
  • Oak: strength and durability. The hard wood of oak is particularly resistant to mechanical damage and lasts for generations, gradually acquiring a deeper hue over time.
  • Shape stability. Properly dried wood of both species maintains the geometry of the tall kiot without distortion.
  • Natural beauty. Without gilding, the texture of the wood and the craftsmanship of the carving come to the forefront, and the kiot harmoniously fits into an interior with wooden furnishings.

Workshop Traditions

The kiot is made by the masters of the creative workshop of sacred products PIVTORAK & COMPANY in the city of Kosiv, Ivano-Frankivsk region. Carved kiots have long adorned the temples of Hutsulshchyna, preserving the icons before which the community has prayed for generations. The workshop continues this tradition, combining classical architectural forms with manual Kosiv carving: each column, console, and curl of the crest is crafted by hand.

Care

  • Install the kiot away from heating batteries and direct sunlight to protect both the wood and the icon
  • Maintain stable humidity in the temple without sharp temperature fluctuations
  • Place candlesticks and lamps at a safe distance from the carving of the crest and columns
  • Remove dust from the openwork, capitals, and crest with a soft brush
  • Periodically care for the wood with wood care products, such as oil or wax
  • Do not use abrasives, solvents, or aggressive household chemicals
