“Indian summer lasts for a short time, but it is then that the mountains show their warmest colors — before true autumn arrives.” This is how they say in Kosiv about the brief period of golden warmth before the cold — hence the name of this rug.

The woolen rug “Indian Summer” is a product of the Hutsul Carpet Workshop in a warm beige-cream palette with burgundy-turquoise-mustard geometric medallions. The non-pile weaving technique makes the rug universal for any space, while the sturdy base allows the bright ornament to stand out distinctly without overwhelming the interior.

Where the name comes from — about the last warmth

Indian summer is a short period of warm sunny days at the end of September when the mountains last show the colors of ripening: burgundy rose hips, amber leaves, turquoise evening sky. This palette of warm and cool shades on a light background became the basis of the rug's ornament.

Ornament — flower-feathers

The central motif of the rug consists of vertical rows of stylized flower-like medallions resembling opened feathers or inflorescences, in a combination of burgundy, turquoise, brown, and mustard colors. In Hutsul weaving, such an ornament traditionally signifies:

  • life force — floral motifs symbolize growth and renewal;
  • harmony of opposites — the combination of warm (burgundy, mustard) and cool (turquoise) colors;
  • protection of the home — the diamond-shaped structure of the medallion was traditionally considered a talisman;
  • continuity of the lineage — the repeated rhythmic pattern along the entire rug.

Palette — from beige to burgundy

“Indian Summer” is built on the contrast of a light neutral base and a rich multicolored ornament: beige · cream · burgundy · turquoise · brown · mustard accent.

Where it fits, and where it doesn’t

✓ Suitable
  • hallway, corridor, or kitchen — thanks to the non-pile practical texture;
  • interiors in neutral, beige-brown tones;
  • spaces where an accent is needed without overwhelming color;
  • next to a bed, sofa, or dining table.
✗ Not the best choice
  • interiors in purely cool, monochrome gray tones without warm accents;
  • spaces with a lot of bright contrasting prints;
  • areas with high traffic (without a carpet pad it may slip).

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a non-pile rug differ from a regular carpet?
Non-pile (mat) weaving is thinner and denser, making the rug lighter, easier to clean, and well-suited for high-traffic areas — corridors, kitchens, by doors.

Does the rug slip on smooth floors?
On tiles or laminate, we recommend an anti-slip underlay — this is standard practice for any woven rugs without a rubber backing.

Do colored threads bleed during washing?
The workshop uses stable dyes with fixation before weaving. With proper care — cold water, gentle wool detergent — the color lasts for years.

Is it suitable for homes with pets?
Yes, the non-pile structure is especially convenient — pet hair does not get stuck deep in the pile and is easily removed.

Can the rug be washed in a washing machine?
Not recommended — wool may deform. Optimal: hand washing in cool water or dry cleaning.

Care

Vacuum at medium power without a brush attachment for daily care. Once a season — air out in fresh air (not in direct sunlight). If stained — dry cleaning or hand washing in cool water (up to 30°C) with a gentle wool detergent. Do not wring — let the water drain naturally. Dry horizontally, laid flat, away from heating batteries.
