“In Chornohora, the fire burns — while the spruces stand and look at the sky.” This is how they refer to this carpet in Kosiv — and this is where its name comes from.
The Hutsul carpet “Flame of Chornohora” is the hottest product from the Hutsul Carpet Workshop. Saturated red, graphite-black, ochre, and silvery-gray — the palette that embodies the very heart of the Carpathians: the fire of the bonfire, the darkness of the spruce forest, and the first rays of the sun over Hoverla.

Where the name comes from — about Chornohora and fire
Chornohora is the highest mountain range of the Ukrainian Carpathians, the heart of Hutsulshchyna. It is here that sheep are grazed, bonfires are lit, and the oldest legends are passed down from generation to generation. Red is the color of fire, life, and love in Hutsul culture. Black is the color of night, mountains, and earth. The combination of these two colors in the carpet is like a bonfire against a dark slope: a memory of evenings in the meadow when shepherds gather around the fire after a hard day.
Ornament — spruce branches as a talisman
The main motif of the carpet is vertical “branches,” made up of stylized arrow-like fir trees. In the folk weaving of Hutsulshchyna, this ornament is called spruce or tree of life. It symbolizes:
- connection to the Carpathian forest — spruce is a sacred tree for the Hutsul;
- protection from evil forces — “thorny” branches traditionally “kept” misfortune out of the home;
- lineage — each new “branch” represents a new clan, a new generation;
- life force — spruce is evergreen, thus symbolizing the immortality of the spirit.
Between the main motifs, the master wove narrow ribbons with diamonds and steps — these are additional protective signs that “close” the magical pattern.
Palette — from ash to heat
“Flame of Chornohora” is built on the classic principle of contrast, without half-tones: bright red, graphite-black, warm brown, honey ochre, smoky gray, cream.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the carpet look too bright in an ordinary apartment?
Yes, this carpet is an accent piece. It is designed to be the main visual center of the space. If the room has neutral-colored walls and few other patterns — “Flame of Chornohora” will fit perfectly.
Will the colored threads bleed during washing?
The workshop uses stable dyes that are set before weaving. With proper care, the colors retain their richness for years. It’s best to wash it separately from other items the first time.
Can this carpet be hung on the wall?
Yes, and this is one of the best options. The carpet is dense enough to hold its shape. It can be secured on a strip with Velcro or a wooden rail threaded through the tassels at the top.
Does it keep you warm in winter as a floor carpet?
Yes. Wool is a natural insulator, keeping a pleasant temperature for the feet even on cold tiles or concrete.
Can it be used in a house with pets?
Yes, but claws may catch on the dense weaving. Animal fur is easily removed with a vacuum cleaner.
Care
For daily care — vacuum on medium power without a brush attachment. Once a season, it is advisable to air it out in fresh air. In case of soiling — dry cleaning or hand washing in cool water (up to 30°C) with a delicate wool detergent. Do not wring — let the water drain naturally. Dry horizontally, in a spread-out form, away from heating batteries.
