The episcopal chair is an essential attribute in the eastern part of the altar. In Orthodox churches, during the episcopal service, the bishop sits in the chair while the serving priest is positioned on benches on either side of the pulpit. The chair is usually richly decorated, and carpets are laid around it during the service. Sometimes, the episcopal chair is made as a single piece with a kiot for the icon of the Almighty.

If there is little space between the altar and the eastern wall, the chair is made in the form of a small pouf. In any case, the chair must organically fit into the space of the altar, maintaining the style of the entire decoration of the altar part of the church.
