The archbishop's chair is a necessary attribute in the eastern part of the altar. In Orthodox churches, during the archbishop's service, the bishop sits on the chair - while the serving priest is located on benches on either side of the pulpit during the liturgy.

The chair is usually richly decorated, and carpets are laid around the chair during the service. Sometimes the archbishop's chair is made as a single piece with the icon case for the Almighty. If there is little space between the altar and the eastern wall of the altar, the chair is made in the form of a small ottoman.
