Hutsul carpet "Spruce Turquoise"

“Frost on the spruces lasts until noon — and then it melts and drips in turquoise drops to the roots.” This is how they say in Kosiv about the first morning frost in the mountains — hence the name of this carpet.

The Hutsul carpet “Spruce Turquoise” is one of the freshest in mood from the Workshop of Hutsul Carpets. Turquoise, peach, olive, and cream-white — a palette that evokes a winter morning in the Carpathians: frost on spruce branches, soft dawn over the glade, and the warm wood of the shepherd's hut against the cold air outside.

Where the name comes from — about frost and spruce

Spruce is an evergreen tree, sacred to Hutsul culture, a symbol of endurance and vitality. Turquoise is the color of frost and icy air that envelops the spruce forests on cold mornings. Together, these two images give the carpet its name: the warm tree of life under the cold breath of the mountains, which always remain themselves, despite any bad weather.

Ornament — sunny medallions

The central motif of the carpet is diamond-shaped medallions on a light field, surrounded by small geometric “teeth.” In Hutsul weaving, this pattern is called sunny or a home protector. It symbolizes:

• the sun and warmth — even in the cold season, it is associated with light;
• protection of the home — the diamond has traditionally been considered a guardian sign of the threshold;
• balance — a symmetrical repeating pattern signifies harmony in the home;
• abundance — the multiplicity of medallions symbolizes a full, filled home.

Peach and olive stripes frame the composition, adding warmth to the pattern against the backdrop of cold turquoise accents.

Will it look cold in a room with such a carpet?
No — the turquoise here is softened by warm peach and olive, so the carpet does not “cool” the space but adds freshness without a feeling of sterility.

Will the colored threads bleed during washing?
The workshop uses stable dyes with fixation before weaving. With proper care — cold water, delicate wool detergent, no soaking — the color lasts for years.

Can the carpet be hung on the wall?
Yes, the carpet is dense enough and holds its shape. Secure it on a strip with Velcro or a wooden rail threaded through the tassels at the top.

Does it warm like a carpet on the floor?
Yes, wool is a natural insulator, the carpet noticeably “cuts off” the cold from tiles or concrete screed.

Is it suitable for a home with pets?
Yes, but claws may catch on the dense weaving. Animal hair is easily removed with a vacuum cleaner.

Care

Vacuum at medium power without a brush attachment for daily care. Once a season — airing outdoors (not in direct sunlight). If soiled — dry cleaning or hand washing in cool water (up to 30°C) with a delicate wool detergent. Do not wring — let the water drain naturally. Dry horizontally, in a spread-out form, away from heating batteries.
