How the blanket is born

To make blankets, wool from sheep grazing in the Carpathian meadows and natural dyes are used. First, the sheared wool is washed and dried, then carded with a special comb, forming a fluffy ball resembling a cloud. Blankets and pillows filled with carded wool promote healthy sleep — they can absorb and release up to 30% moisture into the surrounding environment without creating a feeling of dampness in bed.

Carded wool is easily twisted into threads (rovnytsia), from which blankets are produced on traditional weaving looms. There are several traditional patterns that can identify which village the blanket was made in — for example, in Yavory, they weave crooked, parquet, rainbow, and other patterns.

The newly woven product goes into the rolling machine — a huge wooden tub, narrowed at the bottom, where a stream of water falls with force. The water bursts in and rapidly rises, creating a whirlpool in which the blankets spin for several hours (the Hutsuls say — valyuyetsia). During this time, they become tight and fluffy. After that, the blankets are dried on sticks and brushed to fluff the wool.
