Materials and technologies: Hutsul beds are made according to traditional bed-making technologies. For this, natural sheep's wool is used, which is collected from sheep that graze on the Carpathian meadows. Woollen base is also used to create the base of the bed. Natural dyes are used to provide beautiful and natural colours.
Wool preparation: The process begins with washing and drying the sheared wool. After that, the wool is scratched with a special comb, which turns it into a fluffy ball, similar to a cloud. This is an important stage that prepares the material for further processing.
Weaving and Patterns: Combed wool is turned into threads or roving, which are then used to weave bedclothes on looms. These beds have characteristic traditional patterns that allow you to determine which village they come from.
The “felting” process (felting): After weaving, the new product is sent to a special device, the felting. This wooden trough tapers downward, and then a stream of water falls through it with great force. The stream of water gushes up, forming a large whirlpool in which the sleepers “roll”. This process makes the beds tight and fluffy.
Additional processing and drying: After “felting”, the beds are dried on poles, brushed with a brush to loosen the fibres and ensure softness and fluffiness.
