“Copper and iron intertwined on the oak, like paths on the glade, — and each knot holds the word of the master”
The Hutsul axe “Carpathian Weaving” combines three crafts: blacksmithing, jewelry, and carpentry. The head is forged from a solid piece of steel, the blade is made of tool steel U11A, and the oak handle is covered along its entire length with a dense geometric weaving of sheet copper and iron wire. The poll is decorated with engraving and notching, and the metal is protected by thermal bluing. The axe is available at the Workshop of Hutsul Axes and Kelefs.

About the Product
The head of the axe is forged from solid St3 steel. This metal is well-suited for hot processing and retains its shape, while the working edge is made of U11A steel, which is harder and more wear-resistant. After forging, the surface is polished, the poll is covered with an engraved ornament with notching, and then the metal is blued thermally. This gives the steel a restrained dark shade, against which the pattern is well-defined.
The handle is made of oak. The wood is charred and brushed, meaning that the soft fibers are removed to reveal the texture's relief, and then it is soaked in linseed oil. The main part of the handle is covered with weaving made of thin copper strips and iron wire. The diamond geometric pattern is assembled by hand, row by row, and the ends of the weaving are secured with metal rings. The total height of the axe is 86 cm. Together with the blade cover, it weighs 1080 g.

Advantages of the Material
- Steel St3 — plastic and tough, does not chip on impact, making it suitable for a solid forged head.
- Steel U11A — carbon tool steel with high hardness, used for the working edge.
- Oak — dense, heavy, and durable wood. Charring and brushing emphasize its natural relief.
- Linseed oil — penetrates the wood's pores, protects it from moisture and drying out, and retains the warmth of the wood to the touch.
- Copper — a soft warm metal. Over the years, it develops a noble patina, and the weaving becomes deeper in tone.
- Thermal bluing — forms an oxide film on the steel that slows corrosion and provides an even dark color.
Traditions of Hutsul Craftsmanship
For a Hutsul, the axe was both a staff in the mountains and a symbol of the owner's dignity, as well as an essential part of festive attire. Therefore, the handle and poll have long been adorned with metal: rings, overlays, wire weaving, and engraved patterns. The Workshop of Hutsul Axes and Kelefs in Kosiv continues this tradition. Each product here passes through the forge, the cutter, and the hands of the master, who selects the ornament so that the weaving on the handle and the engraving on the poll read as a whole.
Care
- Wipe the axe with a dry soft cloth, without water or cleaning agents.
- Every few months, apply a thin layer of oil to the blued metal and remove the excess.
- Renew the handle with linseed oil as needed, avoiding the weaving.
- Copper darkens over time — this is natural patina. Do not use abrasives for cleaning.
- Store the product in a dry place with the cover on the blade.
