Weaving cooperative from Kosiv - 3 page

Weaving Artel from Kosiv — a family union of Hutsul carpet-making masters who work in the living tradition of Carpathian weaving. We are not a factory or a workshop with a conveyor: our artel consists of horizontal looms, natural wool, and weavers who learned the craft from their mothers and grandmothers. There are no concepts of "batch" or "edition" here — each carpet, spindle, or runner is woven by a specific person from the first to the last thread.

What is an artel

The word "artel" in folk crafts means not just a collective, but a voluntary association of masters with a common tool, common work rules, and each person's responsibility for quality. This is how the weavers of Kosiv worked back in the 19th century, when carpet weaving was not a "trade," but a way of life for entire families. Our artel continues this format: several weavers, a shared workshop, common orders, but authorship — in each product is personal. That is why we do not have identical carpets even within the same model.

Kosiv Weaving School

Kosiv is one of the three historical centers of Ukrainian carpet weaving alongside Reshetylivka and Hlyniany. The Kosiv school formed in the 19th century and is distinguished by a special combination of geometric ornamentation, warm earthy tones, and vertical rhythm of composition. Here, they do not weave "in the classical style" from a textbook — they have preserved the very technique, which has never been interrupted even during years of bans and decline of folk crafts.

Our artel works precisely in this school: students learn on the loom, not on YouTube, ornaments are selected from memory and old samples, and the thread undergoes manual preparation from washing to dyeing.

How we work

The production of one carpet is a complete cycle that lasts from several days to several weeks depending on the size and complexity of the ornament:

  1. Dyeing. We use both certified stable dyes and natural plant pigments for limited series (oak bark, onion skins, buckthorn bark).
  2. Warping and setting up the loom. This is the longest preparatory stage — the base for a large carpet is warped manually for up to two days.
  3. Weaving. In the classic over-and-under method on a horizontal loom. No electric drives.
  4. Finishing. The product is removed from the loom, undergoes trimming, final shaping of fringes, and gentle squeezing.

Who are our masters

In the artel work weavers of three generations — from older masters who have been weaving since the 1980s to young apprentices who have come during the years of renewed interest in ethnotextiles. This is not a "brand" with hired workers for a salary — these are people for whom the weaving loom stands at home alongside ordinary household life. That is why the rhythm of our production is alive: some work faster, some slower, and among the works, exceptional author pieces occasionally appear that are not repeated.

What distinguishes our products from others

  • Stable knot density. We maintain an average density of 8–12 threads per cm — this is the classic Kosiv standard;
  • Natural base. We do not use synthetic cords in the base — even if it would reduce production costs;
  • No overlocking or machine edging. Edges are formed only manually with base ribbons;
  • Transparent origin of raw materials. We are ready to tell which wool is used for a specific carpet.

Orders for custom sizes

In addition to ready-made items, the artel accepts orders for custom carpets and spindles: for specific sizes, with a choice of color palette within the traditional range, repeating the ornament from a family sample or a museum exhibit. The execution time is from 7 to 30 days depending on the size. To start the conversation, it is enough to send a reference image and indicate the required dimensions in centimeters.
