Materials: Natural sheep wool is used to make bedspreads, which comes from sheep grazing in the Carpathian meadows. Woolen base and natural dyes are also used.
Wool preparation: First, the sheared sheep wool is washed and dried. Then it is combed with a special comb, which forms a fluffy ball.
Weaving: Combed wool is transformed into threads or yarns. Bedspreads are made from these threads on weaving looms, often homemade ones.
Weaving and patterns: Weavers use various patterns for weaving bedspreads, which are traditional for certain villages in the Hutsul region. This helps identify which village they come from.
Felting: After weaving, the woven bedspreads undergo a special process using a device called a felting machine. This is a large wooden tub where a stream of water falls from a great height. This process helps "felt" the bedspreads, giving them a fluffy and soft texture.
Drying and processing: The felted bedspreads are dried on poles, combed with a brush to fluff up the fibers. This process helps the bedspreads become soft and fluffy.
This process of making bedspreads is labor-intensive and requires a lot of manual work. They have distinctive local patterns and appearance that reflect the traditional Hutsul style.
